My Run-Away Imagination

by Haley on August 5, 2011

The combination of a sweat-logged iPod and two Ironmans in the next two months has left me doing some really long runs entertained by only my own thoughts. Sometimes running without music can be a really good thing. It gives me a chance to think about my running form, focus on my pace, and even enjoy the sounds of nature/traffic/my own stomping and man-breath.

But recently I’ve found my mind wavering just a bit. And some unnatural fears have been creeping in…

My first crazy fear is snakes. Occasionally when I’m riding or running I will see a snake. Usually it’s had a run-in with a car and poses no danger to me. But I have seen some live ones. I’ve also seen True Grit, and I know what snakes can do. And without John Wayne or Jeff Bridges nearby, who knows what could happen to me?!  My mongoose brethren would not approve of my fear of snakes.

My second crazy fear is cows. Or actually bulls. Last weekend I was running past a herd of cows. A calf took one look at me and started running away, triggering a stampede! At first I thought this was a sign of my power. Yes!  I cause animals to run in fear! Except one cow – or actually a bull – he gave me a long look that instantly had me questioning the strength of the fence between us. I was about to scale a small sapling in search of safety when the bull turned away and joined his herd. Thank goodness!

I had barely breathed a sigh of post-stampede relief when I found myself face-to-face with three very mean looking dogs. I’m fairly certain they were a pack of Muttations transported straight from the Hunger Games, though they may have been a pack of Welsh Corgis, which I find equally terrifying.

Attack of the torsos - so scary!!!

I usually run with keys or a water bottle that can double as weapons, but for this run I was completely empty handed. As I slowly backed away from the dogs while taking full advantage of my vast four-letter word vocabulary, a truck came by. The friendly couple had passed earlier, seen me, seen the dogs, and had decided to return and collect my mangled corpse. Surprised to find me alive, the Good Samaritans distracted the mutts while I high tailed it back toward my car. That was a close one!

Despite my animal apprehensions, I still manage to get myself out the door, day after day – likely a sign of extreme mental illness. But I did just use a Target giftcard to purchase a brand new iPod Shuffle! It may seem counter-intuitive that running with music makes me less afraid, but ignorance is bliss, and I’m fairly certain most of my worries reside only in my head.

One person I know who is never afraid is my friend Drew. He’s actually racing the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon – touted as the “World’s Toughest Ironman” – this weekend! Drew will be swimming in a 55 degree fjord, riding over crazy Norwegian mountain passes, and then running a marathon – UPHILL. I admire Drew and his courage and wish him the best of luck. The race starts at 5am Saturday August 6th Norway time – which translates to 11pm Friday night here in ATL. Be sure to follow the action (and take a look at the always exciting pictures) on Drew’s Twitter feed. Go Drew!

Hopefully Drew got a new bike for Norseman...

Birthday Weekend!

by Haley on July 27, 2011

Last weekend I had a LOT to celebrate! It was my 26th birthday and I made whole weekend of it!

Ebeth surprised me with the most beautiful and delicious birthday cake!

And with all that fruit, it must have been moderately healthy, right?

I celebrated with friends AND family since my awesome cousins Karen and Collin were in town.

Cousins!: Karen, Collin, and I

Collin, who braved the crazy trail run with me in Montana last month, actually just moved to Atlanta. I’ve promised to show her some of our Georgia running trails – which I’ve told her are completely wolf free!

And of course, my top birthday weekend priority was seeing the new Harry Potter movie! My friends Alexis and Loren joined me for the Potter Party – and Loren even dressed the part!

Cake, friends, family, and Harry Potter – sounds like the perfect birthday weekend to me! Thanks to everyone who made it so great!

Meet my friend Mary.

Mary after she broke the world record in the 200 fly! I'd be smiling too!

Like any good friend, Mary was absolutely appalled when she heard about my “crusty” Uncrustable situation. And like any good cook, Mary suggested I make my own crust-free PB&J treats.

Knowing I’m severely challenged in all things culinary, Mary sent me a fool-proof make-your-own Uncrustables kit – and I immediately got to work!

Finding white bread at Publix was surprisingly difficult. The whole-grain revolution really didn’t leave much for endurance atheletes looking for easy energy rather than true “nutrition.” I did go with the fancy-schmancy and semi-healthy Natural JIF and “Orchard’s Finest” preserves – I’m a sucker for nice packaging.

Using the Uncrustable maker was surprisingly easy.

And before long I had a whole pile of Uncrustables –

And a whole pile of crusts!

I decided to test my creations on the toughest food critics I know – my cycling class.

EJ and Drew seemed suspicious –

But Kathryn looked happy!

And one thing was certain – my Uncrustables were completely CRUST FREE! Thanks Mar!

UPDATE: My Uncrustable maker came courtesy of Mary, who lives in Japan, but my amazingly Google-savvy co-worker Reuben just found them online! Homemade Uncrustables for all!

Louisville Training Camp!

by Haley on July 13, 2011

What happens when Coach Diablo and his carbohydrate-loving German coach, Chris Hauth, join evil forces?

The AIMP/Dynamo Multisport Ironman Louisville Training Camp!

A handful of my Dynamo Multisport teammates and I joined a few of Chris’ athletes for a long weekend of triathlon training in Derby City.

We covered pretty much every inch of the bike and run courses – which were even better than I remembered!

The bike course heads out of the city through the beautiful rolling hills on the outskirts of Louisville. The course winds through horse farms and cute little towns – and it’s so much fun to ride!

The flat run course goes right past a few famous Louisville landmarks like the University of Louisville and Churchill Downs.

We skipped the swim course in favor of the gorgeous U of L pool – but do not worry, I plan to make some serious waves in the Ohio River in a few weeks!

The best part of the camp was the camraderie. And of course, getting some inside tips from Diablo and the German – including Ironman nutrition!

Who wouldn't love a muffin sandwich?

Now I’m feeling better than ever about racing in Louisville next month. I know I’m a bit fitter and wiser than one year ago, though there is definitely still LOTS of room for improvement (especially in the wisdom category, hah!) But one thing is for sure – I am having the BEST time training for this race. And racing with my teammates on August 28th is going to be an absolute BLAST!

What could possibly be better than a weekend in the North Georgia Mountains with friends? Having that weekend coincide with the Birthday of the USA!!!
 .
Add in some swim/bike/run fun and it was pretty much the best weekend of my life.
.

Brent's bike jersey - the definition of AmeriCAN

The workout format was similar to the set-up we had back in April – lots and lots of hills. But this time we  added a few new faces:

Newbie Tim summiting his first ever GAP!

By day three everyone was riding like veterans – even cruising up the steep grades of Hogpen.

Becca, Kris, and Ryan - don't look down! Hogpen is STEEP!

And it wasn’t all about riding – the dinners were almost as good as the desserts! Linda brought her famous candy bar cookie cake:

And I contributed GIANT Marshmallows for the World’s Best S’mores.

DJ Kidd and SpK - Professional S'more roasters

We all came away stronger, happier, tanner, and with a bit more appreciation for the great country we call home. And of course, looking forward to the hard work paying off with fast racing later this summer!
