TYR Swim Set of the Week – September 19, 2013

by Haley on September 19, 2013

In college I swam with a girl named Ashley Roby and she was ALWAYS the first person in the pool at EVERY practice. No sooner had the warm-up set left the coach’s lips and

***SPLASH***

There went Roby! People would try to beat her into the pool, but I don’t remember anyone ever being successful. I always admired the way Roby charged into every workout, without a moment’s hesitation. She definitely got more pool time than anyone else, even if only by five seconds!

I don’t usually have too much trouble starting a workout (with the noted exception of when I talk too much on the pool deck), but on days when I do find myself struggling to get out the door, I think about Roby. Her consistent drive to seize every moment and every opportunity really inspired me back in college, and it continues today! Though I find new running shoes also help:

This week’s TYR Swim Set of the Week has TWO options! Coach Maria came up with this one earlier this week. I went with the IM version (option 1) because I like to humble myself with some stroke work every now and then. Take your pick or do them both, just remember – no hesitation!  Be the first in the pool, Ashley Roby style!

When legendary aerodynamics expert and bike fitter John Cobb agreed to let me stop by his Tyler, Texas fit studio, I tried to subtly warn him.

“My coach calls me Mongoose. And not because I like snakes.”

My proportions, while great for swimming, can make finding an aerodynamic position on a bike pretty darn difficult. Luckily, John and his crew were up for the challenge!

My bike fit started at 9am at Tyler’s finest swimming hole. I thought it was a little odd to start a bike fit with a swim, but once I laid eyes on the pool, I wasn’t about to object!

Fifty meters of outdoor, saltwater, 80 degree perfection. Throw in some fish and I could have been in Hawaii. I joined John’s Kona-bound assistant, Seth, for a few laps before drying off and heading into the fit studio.

The big numbers in bike fitting are “stack” and “reach.”

My goal was to spend some time on John’s fit bike, figure out my ideal stack and reach numbers, and then make adjustments to my current bike to get it as close as possible to those perfect numbers.

The actual fit process was INTENSE. I spent time walking, running, sitting, standing. And to figure out how my position changes as I fatigue, John and his crew had me riding my bike on the trainer for what felt like hours! I was a sweaty mess to say the least!

Eventually they moved me from my bike onto an easily adjustable fit bike. This is when the magic really started as John and Seth made changes to the fit bike until I was in the best possible position. Once they had those measurements, they translated them to my bike and voila!

Before long, things were looking much better! But I was far from finished! Seth and I hit the pavement so I could test out the new fit on the open road. I was a little nervous at first (I’m so low, I can practically lick my front wheel), but the new fit didn’t feel nearly as scary as it looks. I didn’t notice any loss of control, even on descents. If anything, I’m more comfortable since I’m a little more stretched out.

MAJOR Thanks to John, Seth, Jeremy, Ginger, and everyone at Cobb Cycling for taking on my challenging dimensions and helping me out in a BIG way! I know my more aerodynamic fit is going to be a huge help when I’m headed into those Kona winds next month!

I also have to extend a HUGE thank you to Andrew Shanks and everyone at all3sports.com for getting my TriBike Transport bound race bike shipped out to Texas so the Cobb crew could help me get it all set for Kona. And to genius bike mechanic Allen Heaton for doing a little fine tuning once I got back to Atlanta. Being a professional triathlete really does take a village!

TYR Swim Set of the Week – September 12, 2013

by Haley on September 12, 2013

There are some VERY good reasons my weekend trip to Dallas turned into a TWO WEEK stay!

First, my family is awesome and I didn’t want to leave. And thankfully, they must like me too, because despite my ability to get bike grease EVERYWHERE, they didn’t kick me out!

Second, I got to exercise with some really cool people in Dallas. Including some ridiculously fast and friendly swimmers from the Dallas Area Masters team and my high school friend Nate, who is doing his first Ironman in Cozumel this year!

Third, I landed a life-changing bike fit with the legendary John Cobb and his amazing Cobb Cycling Crew in Tyler, Texas. (Full report on the fit coming soon!) The bike fit was so much more than I expected, and even included a dip in what has to be one of the world’s most beautiful pools!

Fourth, Surprise! I got a Kona slot! Thank GOD my super-organized mom was on hand to calmly help me plan a last minute trip to the Big Island!

But by far, the biggest highlight of my trip to Texas was getting to celebrate my sister Hannah’s 24th birthday! The big day came complete with the most delicious key lime pie birthday “cake,” a chick flick at the local movie theater, and a birthday swim!

The swim set was written as 2500 meters, but as Hannah pointed out, if it’s your 24th birthday, you’re allowed to stop after just 2400! Try it out, and I hope your next vacation is as much of a fun adventure as mine!

TYR Swim Set of the Week – August 29, 2013

by Haley on August 29, 2013

Hi from Dallas, Texas!

photo-9

There’s nothing like a spur-of-the-moment road trip! I’m taking advantage of Ironman recovery and spending some quality time with my mom and sister. This has also meant swimming some laps with my sister’s masters swim team. The Dallas Area Masters are quite the crew! And it didn’t take much convincing to get me into this gorgeous 50 meter outdoor pool!

In honor of my Ironman recovery, this week’s TYR Swim Set of the Week is a recovery set. Coach Matthew came up with this one, and if you like 25s, I think you’ll like this set! Try it out and enjoy it, because it’s back to work soon enough!!
