Homemade Uncrustables: Guaranteed Crust Free!

by Haley on July 21, 2011

Meet my friend Mary.

Mary after she broke the world record in the 200 fly! I'd be smiling too!

Like any good friend, Mary was absolutely appalled when she heard about my “crusty” Uncrustable situation. And like any good cook, Mary suggested I make my own crust-free PB&J treats.

Knowing I’m severely challenged in all things culinary, Mary sent me a fool-proof make-your-own Uncrustables kit – and I immediately got to work!

Finding white bread at Publix was surprisingly difficult. The whole-grain revolution really didn’t leave much for endurance atheletes looking for easy energy rather than true “nutrition.” I did go with the fancy-schmancy and semi-healthy Natural JIF and “Orchard’s Finest” preserves – I’m a sucker for nice packaging.

Using the Uncrustable maker was surprisingly easy.

And before long I had a whole pile of Uncrustables –

And a whole pile of crusts!

I decided to test my creations on the toughest food critics I know – my cycling class.

EJ and Drew seemed suspicious –

But Kathryn looked happy!

And one thing was certain – my Uncrustables were completely CRUST FREE! Thanks Mar!

UPDATE: My Uncrustable maker came courtesy of Mary, who lives in Japan, but my amazingly Google-savvy co-worker Reuben just found them online! Homemade Uncrustables for all!

I can attest to how tasty those home made uncrustables were! Bravo job on your 1st attempt! And just think of how much money you’ll save by not buying the store pre-packaged brand!

PS if you have any idea where I can get my own “Uncrustable maker” aka that metal thing… I’d be very interested.

Glad you liked it!! I hope that you never get a crust on your uncrustables ever again :) I’m going to get another one so that I can make uncrustables for Charlie’s first half ironman (or borrow one from a friend) Also going to get some Hammer gels and mixes. What you think about that brand??

I LOVE my uncrustables maker! Definitely make some for Char’s half. And I’ve never used Hammer gel, but I know a lot of people who like them. Be sure to try the Montana Huckleberry flavor!

Pampered Chef has a “Cut-N-Seal” that sells for just under $10. I just ordered one so I can make my own uncrustables.
