A few of my top guilty pleasures include (but are not limited to):
1. Waking up before sunrise
2. Eating HUGE breakfasts (with lots of coffee)
3. Recovery swims
This week’s TYR Swim Set of the Week is a guilty pleasure recovery swim. What’s not to love about swimming easy? Especially if the swim comes after a hard bike and/or run session. MAJOR bonus points if it’s done outdoors!
Recovery swims are a great chance to loosen up, work on drills and technique, and just enjoy being in the water. But there is one thing you MUST remember about recovery swims:
EASY does not equal LAZY!
Keep that form sharp! My coaches include some intensity in all of my swim sessions, even the easy ones. Why? Because races don’t start with everyone being polite and going easy! I need to be ready to fight those first couple meters!
And even though all of my races these days are freestyle, I still like to add in some stroke work every now and then. Backstroke feels nice and relaxing, Butterfly doubles as strength work, and Breastroke reminds me to be happy I’m a triathlete and not a swimmer! Uncomfortable doing strokes other than freestyle? Totally fine. Replace the strokework with some freestyle drills (catch-up and six kick switch are my favs).
